The Tompkins Agency for Ukrainian Literature in Translation

TAULT is a nonprofit literary agency and translation house devoted to the visibility and availability of contemporary Ukrainian Literature in the English-speaking world. Founded in 2019 by literary translator Zenia Tompkins, TAULT promotes the work of award-winning Ukrainian authors, with a specific interest in Ukraine’s younger generation of writers. Through our New Voices program, we also seek to build visibility for emerging authors of exceptional promise.

Over the three years since our inception, our translator collective has grown to include ten translators, six of whom work with Ukrainian literature full-time. As a collective, we are available to assist publishers from their preliminary scouting of Ukrainian literature, through the acquisitions, translation, editing, and marketing processes. We also actively work with presses to help them secure the funds necessary to undertake a publication by assisting them in securing grant funding and private donations. Our goal is to be a “one-stop-shop” for English presses interested in publishing a Ukrainian book.

TAULT does not sign agreements of representation with individual Ukrainian authors or presses but instead relies on our network of established relationships in Ukraine. Though we are happy to facilitate contract discussions, and often do, contracts are negotiated directly with the Ukrainian rights holder once we have helped you find a book suitable for your press. We do routinely advise on going licensing and translation rates, the likelihood of a particular project to be awarded grant funding, and other considerations. As such, at this time does TAULT accept or expect commissions on the books we place.

As an agency, we represent and only work with the translators in our collective, and can only assist with scouting, acquisitions, or procuring funding for projects that one of our translators will be working on. Our translators translate Ukrainian literature across a variety of genres and styles, from literary fiction and popular fiction to the growing field of Ukrainian creative nonfiction. TAULT promotes and translates books for all ages, including adult, middle grade, and children’s. We invite you to learn more about the books we think merit publication in English, the Ukrainian authors and presses we work with, and our approach.
