MATERIALS AVAILABLE to foreign presses and agents:

March 5, 2022

Over the last three years, TAULT and its translators have focused heavily on translating samples of Ukrainian books and other supporting materials to facilitate the placement of Ukrainian books for publication in English and other languages. We have working relationships with over one hundred Ukrainian authors, either directly with the author or via their Ukrainian publisher. We are thrilled by the recent increase in interest in contemporary Ukrainian literature and are happy to put these materials at the disposal of presses around the world who are considering publishing a Ukrainian book. We have been in recent contact with a large number of the Ukrainian authors and publishers we work with and will gladly make introductions to or facilitate conversations with them.

TAULT currently has the following materials that we can put at your disposal:

  • An array of catalogs from a variety of presses of both adult and children’s books, including official country catalogs published by the Ukrainian Book Institute, which we will make available on our website in the coming days

  • English samples of approximately fifty adult books, both fiction and nonfiction, that are available for publication in English

  • English samples of approximately eighty adult books, both fiction and nonfiction, that are available for publication in languages other than English

  • English translations or samples of approximately thirty recently published children’s and middle grade books, the majority of which are available for publication in English

  • A variety of English-language supporting materials, to including author bios and resumes, synopses for works of fiction, and chapter outlines for works of nonfiction

In light of the current situation and the resultant restraints on our time, we’re finding that it is most expedient to begin by sending a press catalogs to get a sense of what piques their staff’s interest, then move the conversation to a Zoom call, where we can provide feedback on which books are still available for publication and make additional recommendations. From there, we’re happy to share any potentially relevant samples and supporting materials via a shared folder for a press to review as their staff has time.

Though we are maintaining contact with a large number of Ukrainian authors and publishers, we are discouraging them from signing contracts right now. We ask foreign presses interested in Ukrainian books to be understanding of the fact that many of these individuals currently fear for their safety or the safety of their loved ones. If you have contacted a Ukrainian publisher directly in the last week and haven’t heard back, please email us and we’ll happily continue the conversation with you on their behalf, until they’re able to work with you directly.

For foreign agents and scouts interested in representing Ukrainian authors, please note that TAULT does not accept commissions on licensing agreements or rights sales. As such, we are happy to collaborate with you informally and share our materials with you as well.

Please email us at info@tault.org to request catalogs and begin your exploration of contemporary Ukrainian literature.

OPEN CALL: Translators (UA and RU), Editors, Copy-Editors, Fundraisers

February 24, 2022

Over recent months, as Russia’s animosity and aggression toward Ukraine have grown, TAULT has actively been recruiting new translators to work with our team to assist us with an increased demand for Ukrainian literature. In light of today’s events, which have put not just the continued work of Ukrainian authors but their very lives at risk, we are renewing this call publicly. We encourage those of you with experience translating from Ukrainian and/or Russian or working in book production, to include editing and copy-editing, to consider getting involved in our work. As the authors we work with take up their swords, we remain committed to translating what their pens have written and sharing it with the world.

TAULT is currently seeking individuals with one or more of the following skill sets:

  • Native-English-speaking translators with command of either Ukrainian or Russian (where necessary, you will be teamed with a native Ukrainian- or Russian-speaker)

  • Native-Ukrainian-speaking translators with a solid command of English (where necessary, you will be teamed with a native English-speaker)

  • Native English speakers with experience editing and copy-editing literary texts, both fiction and non-fiction

  • Individuals, both Ukrainian- and English-speakers, with experience in design and marketing

  • Ukrainian literary and publishing professionals to assist with preparing marketing materials (no English necessary)

  • Community leaders interested in assisting with fundraising for books already scheduled for publication

All work other than fundraising will be paid.

If you’re interested in working with us in any of the above capacities, or to explore other ways in which you can help promote the writing of Ukrainian authors, please email TAULT Director Zenia Tompkins at zenia@tault.org.

Journals and media outlets interested in publishing pieces by or interviews with Ukrainian authors are asked to email TAULT’s Associate Director Kate Tsurkan at apofeniemagazine@gmail.com.
